The Wallersee
With its six square kilometres, it is the largest lake in Salzburg Seenlandes.
"Wallersee": The name is not derived from the fish, the Wallern or Welsen, which are quite common - but refers to the Middle High German Walchen, which meant "strangers". Thus, all Romance peoples south of Bavaria - including the partly Romanceised population of the Alps - were "strangers" to the natives.
The Wenger Moor at the Wallersee - idyllic riparian landscape with dense reed belt is listed as a Natura 2000 European protected area and is habitat for rare water birds, pheasants and beavers, which feel "pudelwohl" at the warm and fish-rich Wallersee.
