The Lock Mattsee was built around 1100 by bishops from Passau in the midst of a landscape shaped by the ice age. In 1398, the castle and the demesne were sold to the Archbishopric of Salzburg. In 1597, an epidemic ravaged the city of Salzburg, causing Archbishop Wolf-Dietrich to retire to the castle Mattsee. In the more recent past, the castle changed hands several times until it was acquired by the municipality of Mattsee in 1949. In 1996, the extensive renovation began on the basis of original plans.
The castle is the ideal starting point for discovery walks along the Mattsee. The Millennium Way around the Schlossberg provides information about the local natural and cultural history with many display boards. The monastery Mattsee and the monastery museum are also worth a visit. Take advantage of the parking facilities at the north car park (free of charge), lido or in the Weyerbucht (fee in the summer season).
The location on the peninsula from the Schlossberg is still attractive today as a Event location with magnificent halls for various occasions. Available are: Tassilo Hall with Gurten vault, Diabelli Hall, Wolf-Dietrich Hall and the castle courtyard with a magnificent lake view.
The beautiful ambience is particularly popular with wedding couples. A civil wedding ceremony is also possible in the Tassilo Hall. Give yourself your "Yes word" in the special setting of this vaulted hall.
The Castle café with winter garden and terrace is a popular meeting place for breakfast lovers.
In the castle Mattsee is also the for years appreciated Leonardo Academy of Arts housed in the attic. Courses in various painting techniques, sculptural work in clay and plaster and arts and crafts are offered all year round. Free taster days in autumn, children's seminars and the tried and tested art course "Visual Design - Painting and Graphics" are also on the programme. In Mattsee Castle you can always visit exhibitions of the art academy and local artists.
